Keep Your Makeup GERM FREE in 5 Simple Ways

WARNING: Is that make-up on your face or are you wearing a bucket-full of germs? The answer is cringing, isn’t it? But, that’s not the worst part. This could actually be the horror of your everyday make-up routine.

But, the good news is that you can have a healthy affair with your make-up in no time. Here are 5 simple tricks that will give your skin a healthy lift-up:

Scoop it out: As a rule, don’t dip your fingertips in the jar or the palette directly. Scoop out the foundation, liquid and gel-based products like eye shadow onto a dish. Here, you can use your fingers or a clean brush to apply the make-up. In case, it’s a powder-based product or roll-on like lipsticks, use a dry tissue to clean the top layer before applying. “Germs reside on the top layer. Thus, it’s always good to dab them off with a dry tissue before applying. Always remember to wash your hands before wearing your make-up. The same rule applies to brushes. So, make sure you clean the brushes dry after every use,” advises Mumbai-based make-up artist Ruchika Bhojwani.

Don’t wash away the goodness: Much is written about the mascara. This product tends to linger around in our make-up box due its limited usage in terms of quantity. But, this doesn’t mean it comes with a longer shelf life. Thus, it’s advisable to throw it away in 3 months of unwrapping it. Also, don’t make the mistake of washing the mascara brush in an attempt to push its expiry date. Washing the brush under water breaks down preservatives and makes room for germ-loving moisture inside the bottle.

Sharpen the tip: Every Time you use an eye pencil sharpen the tip. Sharpening the tip will scrape out any new formed bacteria.

Keep it cool: It’s good to refrigerate your liquid products like foundations. Also, never leave a bag of makeup in the glove compartment of your car. The heat will melt away the preservatives. In fact, this will cut down the life of your make-up products by half. So, as advised at the back of the pack, store the products in cool place.

The handy bag: We all have a handy make-up pouch in our bag. As convenient as it is, this bag could actually be home to many germs. Yes, that’s right. It’s important to clean your bag/pouch regularly. In fact, we suggest buy an inexpensive bag and discard it every 6 months. This will keep your skin healthy and add a hint of freshness. It’s nice to have new things around once in a while, right?

And, as a final tip, “Use the CTM (Cleansing-Toning-Moisturising) method before applying make-up. This will ensure your pores are well packed and your skin is protected from all the germs,” says Bhojwani.
