“The world is your runway”, “Straight off the runway”, “Get the runway look” – we’re all obsessed with the ‘runway’ – the rectangular piece of surface that displays everything influencing and determining world fashion and trends.
We keep our eyes glued to the big digital screens during fashion weeks. As soon as we spot a designer dress that we like, we start to make a mental note of all the things we’re willing to let go, all the expenses we’re going to curb, or even sell off our second-hand merchandise in order to get our hands on the object of our affection; we already start to picture ourselves in all those fancy garments.
But, is getting the runway look so important that we sideline our individual style or not take into consideration our body type? Blindly buying something off the catalogue would make one a part of the already widespread fashion-victim herd. Looking good is as important as looking stylish. And no, you do not have to go into body-issue mode and beat yourself up about not having the figure for a particular outfit. Remember, it’s not your figure that’s imperfect, but the look that needs tweaking to suit your body type. Whether you’re a fashion-conscious college-goer, a working woman or a housewife, you are capable of pulling off any look, given that you style it keeping your body type in mind and carry it off with confidence. Here are a few of the season’s biggest trends that anyone can pull off, with a little bit of hard smart work:
Crop it up!
Crop tops are here to stay a little longer than you thought they would. Pair them up with high-waisted pants if you want to hide that little inevitable bulge, or go for a loose fit, or an embellished crop, to compliment your petite shoulders. Either way, they’re fun, they’re young, they’re trendy.
WM tip: Skinny girls naturally pull off crop tops well, but we’ve seen big girls rock a crop look with just as much poise. If you’re a big girl trying the crop for the first time, or are unsure, play safe by wearing a super stylish floor-length jacket or shrug.
Shoulder to Shoulder
This season, the aphrodisiac has certainly been the shoulder. From off-shoulder to cold shoulder, we witnessed a lot of shoulder blades on the ramp.
WM tip: Women with a dainty frame can opt for frilly Bardot tops, whereas the ones on a slightly heavier side can rely on the tease of the cold shoulder rather than baring it all with an off shoulder. As for those with a perfect hourglass, what’s stopping you from flaunting those curves in a body suit with a shoulder-baring top?
White it out!
The fashion world’s love affair with white continues this season. Now, one needs to understand the play of colour here – white certainly does not come with the body-slimming illusion that black does. It seems pretty basic, the colour, but styling it right requires some effort.
WM tip: Club your favourite white shirt with a contrast pair of denims and see the way it magically defines your waistline! White on white on the other hand can be a winning combination for the skinny girl.
We believe that androgyny is a no-brainer trend. Baggy shirts, boyfriend denims, chunky watches, t-shirt dresses, structured jackets, jerseys and all things macho – people who wear the look, often wear it well. It is bound to suit anyone and everyone, given that it’s clubbed with a ‘boss lady’ attitude. Fuss free, comfortable and stylish; fashion never felt so good.
WM tip: The only rule to add chic to androgynous style is to make sure to keep either the top or the bottom tight – baggy pants with a fitted top and loose shirts with pencil pants or better still, leggings.
Retro, Go Chic!
Be it Ashish N Soni at Lakmé Fashion Week, or Rebecca Minkoff at New York Fashion Week, the 70s have quite evidently made a come back! Turtle necks, cosy knits, ponchos, leather minis, glossy corduroys, bell bottom pants, chiffon maxi dresses and feather earrings are only few of the many, many retro runway looks to love. Either incorporate one of those into your mundane attire or dress up like your favorite pop star, who cares?
WM tip: Just keep in mind your body type, and wear only those silhouettes that enhance your figure. Along with your wardrobe also teleport your attitude to the carefree era of the 70s, embrace your inner hippie and let it all blaze!
So, remember to personalize your favorite runway looks to make a statement and most importantly, have fun while you are at it.
