Balancing Your Checks

Balancing Your Checks

Your wardrobe is naked without it, you own it in a plethora of colours and its easily one of those comforting pick-me-up’s for just about any casual occasion — checks are probably the only pattern in a man’s wardrobe that’s in it for the long haul! And while most of you may have spun many looks around this humble pattern, the style experts at WM are making a strong case for mixing these comforting checks with your super-strict formals.

Business Casual

A common dress code among companies which usually entails no hard and fast rules regarding formal wear. With more than a little room to experiment, there’s no reason why you should restrict your plaids to casual occasions alone — checkered shirts can appear refined when they need to.

Consider your darker plaids to be your best mates for the office, let us paint you a suave picture with a navy blue checked shirt, charcoal blazer thrown over, paired with olive colored cotton chinos — what’s not to love about this look?!

Nail subtle colour-blocking combo’s of plaids with trousers like blues and khaki’s, dark rust reds with dusty browns and greys with dark blues. Complete the look with patterned socks and tan leather oxfords.

WM Tip: Let your bright red tartan plaids stay back in the closet for this look, those are better off worn on a night out with the boys and billiards.

Boardroom Attire

If you get called into a lot of meetings or tend to have weekly presentations with clients, might we suggest a snappier styling solution instead — enter, checkered blazers! Now before you run off into an extremely drastic thought process, let us introduce you to a subtle yet suave range of patterned blazers that do wonders to just about any plain solid shirt and trouser combination.

These blazers come in a range of patterns — from glen plaids to houndstooths, windowpane checks to even tartan if you dare.

Colour coordination is key here, so if you’re the neutral shirt kinda guy then these blazers are easily the best choice for you.

WM Tip: Fit is key here, be sure to get your blazer nipped and tucked by a local tailor, the last thing you want to do is flash some fashion in poor fit.

Executive Decisions

Whether you are an entrepreneur in-the-making or wish to power dress for success, one thing is for sure, not too business’y yet never too casual is the most sought after dress code, no matter what your aspirations may be.

Instead of looking like a corporate drone that’s stuck in a sartorial rut, reach out for sophisticated checked patterns in the form of wide window-panes and ginghams, the latter being the most irresistible looking on all men.

We love how a gingham button down looks over slim fit cotton twill trousers, and if the bottoms are a masculine shade of pastel, it’s even better!

WM Tip: Window pane checks are a great option for leaner men — the minimal grids offer a wider illusion to the onlooker.

Dress-Down Fridays

Most corporate workspaces offer relief to their employees every weekend by giving them a chance to loosen up their attires, but if you’re anything like us fashion victims, being overdressed is better than turning up underdressed.

If you are put-up at one of those creative co-working spaces, there’s no reason why you can’t give the geek-chic look a shot — reach out for argyle checked sweater vests to be worn over solid button downs tucked in or out of casual blue denims. Accessorise this look with a snazzy frame of zero power spectacles and we bet you’ll be the guy that has every girl finding an excuse to borrow some stationery from.

WM Tip: Give new meaning to casual Fridays by showing up in smart casuals than sloppy outfits. Your flannels can come out to play as long as you wear it over a great pair of stone-wash grey denims with boots or slip-ons.

When trying to win in business, it pays to look like you mean it. All the more reason to be the one to change it up with a dash of checks mixed up with formals.
