4 Stylish Pieces To Borrow From Your Mom’s Closet ASAP

Unstructured coats, mini-skirts, colourful scrunchies, bell-bottoms, sheer saris and large hair-dos, these are some fashion favorites we can’t get enough of!
The 80s, arguably, can be deemed the ‘most fashionable decade’ we’ve seen so far. Whether you like it or not, 80s fashion makes a comeback time and again, both on the runway as well as in our wardrobes. Raid your mother’s cupboard because you’re likely to find a few pieces that will help you groove right into that era. Here’s a guide to help you rummage through your mom’s treasured collection. Read on…

Saris

Collected and preserved lovingly over the years, every mom has a range of saris — from delicate sheers to sequinned and embellished or the eternal kanjivarams. This season, take a cue from Kangana Ranaut’s sassy chiffon saris, the one’s that she sported during the promotion of Rangoon. You can also borrow your mom’s flowy floral chiffon saris for an evening soiree. Off on a date? Skip the LBD and try her plain sequinned sari for a change.
WM tip: If you’re the same size as your mom, borrow a couple of her old blouses with puffed sleeves, collars, frills or lace, and team it up with a plain sari. You can also work it with a long maxi skirt.

Off The Shoulder

Bare shoulders have been around for seasons now, and looks like it’s going nowhere. The charming style is in vogue, and your imagination is the only limit to this trend. One-shoulder, off-the-shoulder, or a piece with sheer or a cut-out, dig into your mom’s wardrobe to find all this and more. You can team it up with palazzos, saris or use them as a choli with your lehenga.
WM Tip: Those high-waisted mom jeans will amp up your style quotient when paired with an off-the-shoulder top. Looking for something retro? Go for a polka-dotted top in the same style.

Statement Jewellery

Dramatically accentuate a plain outfit by sporting a ‘bold’ neckpiece or a choker borrowed from your mom’s bauble box. Work a choker with a deep neckline and up you hair game with a classic bouffant to set hearts racing. If that’s not your style, you could always ask your mom for her precious string of pearls and don it with a delicate sari to achieve a timeless look.

Winter Wear

Running out of ideas to ‘style-up’ in cold-climes? Then look through your mom’s cupboard to turn on the heat without spending a dime. From hand-embroidered shawls, scarves with bold prints, elegant cardigans to snug long coats, we bet she has everything that will rule off the ramp for the next few years!
WM Tip: Go DIY by adding some sequins to a plain cardigan or throw in a belt to create a perfect cover-up for your dresses on chilly nights.
