Time and again we see trends triggered by world happenings being replicated on the runway. This Spring Summer 2017 was no different. If the talk in womenswear was feminism, motifs inspired by unrest and warzone was the memo for menswear. The trend in question for men this season is camouflage. The models toughened up in military concealment attire, be it wearing the collections by Givenchy, DSquared2 (they mastered camo with paillettes), Valentino or even Dries Van Noten. A street style favourite, camouflage is a print that can be tricky to style. But even if you’re trying this print for the first time or thinking of a way to work it with existing wardrobe pieces, there are more ways than one to add this print, guys! We’ll break it down for you.
The Camo-printed Shirt
A casual camouflage shirt is a perfect substitute to your regular button down or rather a twist on your classic cotton shirt. You can also try a camo tee if you’re not looking for layers. While this trend is all about that rugged look, there is a way to make it a part of your daily attire. For a sleek ensemble, style it with a casual round-neck tee and a pair of joggers. If you aren’t too comfortable with the print, pair it with darker colours (as it blends it easily). You can also team it up with chinos and a pair of trainers.
Shorts are yet another great way to incorporate this military-inspired trend and it’s easier than you think. Throw in a basic vest over those shorts when off for a grocery run. Want to go semi-formal; dress it up with a formal shirt and a belt. White sneakers or a pair of slip-on will do complete justice to this laid-back look as well.
You don’t always have to go all out when it comes to experimentation. If staying subtle is your style, then a pair of camo-printed shoes is the way to go. While there are plenty of options when it comes to formal camo shoes, our personal favourite is a pair of espadrilles as it’s a smarter counterpart.
The Camo Bag
For those who aren’t sure what the first step in achieving camo perfection should be, we’d say start simple. Try the print through an accessory (a tie, or even socks) or maybe a bag. That way, you can make a statement without having to commit too much. What better way than a sleek messenger bag or a backpack. We leave it up to you to pick what suits your style best.
