India Couture Week 2017: A Sartorial Take On Mughal Elegance By Rohit Bal

When it comes to a Rohit Bal show, the only words that define it are opulence and grandeur. This time for India Couture Week, after Anamika Khanna’s grand display titled Luxury 2017, it was Rohit Bal showcasing his sartorial take on Mughal royalty. The idea was to resuscitate heritage pieces that belonged to the Mughal era. And obviously, the couturier that Bal is, the outcome was nothing short of looking imperial.

Titled Shahaan-e-Khaas, the show was a medley of all things regal — from hues to fabric, embroidery and even techniques. Bal used opulent materials like brocade, crushed velvet, pure silk and linens with intricate resham, zardozi and floral embroidery as well as Swarovski crystals. The hues ranged from ivory, beige to maroons, greens and later blacks. This one was sure “witty and charming” like the designer promised before the show, given he ditched regular motifs of flora and fauna with that of the cock. The flamboyance was evident even through the silhouettes — classic diaphanous and voluminous skirts, jackets layered with capelets, capes for women and cigarette pants with frock coats or bandhgala jackets for men. Bal also used his signature tone-on-tone throughout the collection. The heavily-layered pieces and floor-grazing split sleeve jackets made quite an impact as the models sashayed by.

The ever-charming Arjun Rampal made a return to the ramp as the showstopper, looking dapper in a classic black bandhgala. Over all, what a regal show this was!
