Mommy-To-Be? Get Your Wardrobe Baby-Bump-Friendly!

You are going to have a baby – everything is just joyous and happy around you. In fact, you can practically feel the rainbow and hear the birds singing. Oh, but… yes, we also hear you say…’my clothes’! Well, chin up we say! Celebrate your style, without giving your old fashionista a break! To help you get through this, we asked celebrity designer Nisha Sainani, who is also a mother of 15-month old baby, on how to make the most of non-maternity clothing when you are expecting.

So, here’s a big shout out to all the moms-to- be out there, hear us out-

Wear Colourful Designs

When feeling edgy or gloomy, pep up your mood by picking up colourful clothes. “Floral and abstract prints are perfect for the day. They bring along a young and fun appeal,” says Nisha. For evenings, choose rich colours like burgundy, navy blue or black in simple flowy cuts. Also, this is your time to be completely playful – Add some freshness to your wardrobe “by choosing bright colours like yellow and pink. These colours add glow to your skin and a joy to your bump”, advises Nisha. And, they are best worn in maxi cuts or cinged dresses.

Top It Up Well

Tops that fit well at the bust play a vital role in bringing about the best in you. Long loose kurtas over skinny jeans or A-line/empire line kurtas, baby doll tops, tees, tank tops are good choices for keeping it chic yet simple. “Experiment with the length of the sleeves of the tops”, an exclusive tip from Nisha. For that feminine charm, pick tops with lace detailing, ruffled trims or embroidered or beaded accents. For a casual look, wear tees with boyfriend jeans and dungarees. If you like skinny bottom-wear, go all out and don those skinny pants and leggings with pride, but choose stretchable fabrics for a perfect fit at the waist.

Sway In Long/Short Dress

Though pregnancy calls for plus sizes, who says you need to go for off shaped clothing. Wear tunics, straight shift dresses, flowy dresses and wrap around dresses that fit well at your chest and fall freely at your stomach. Dresses with low back, deep V-neck, empire lines, or off shoulder, work wonders for moms-to- be as they scream style and charm like no other clothing. If you want to go an extra mile to flaunt your fullness, “fitted lycra dresses is your best bet to look cute with your baby bump in all its glory”, states Nisha. The best way to carry these outfits is through layering for which you can use jackets, boleros, cardigans and coats as they balance your silhouette effortlessly. If you still have doubts, take cues from our favourite mom-to- be, Kareena Kapoor.

Celebrate Footwear Finesse

Yes moms-to- be are advised to stay away from heels, but we say if you are healthy and active during your pregnancy, you can definitely wear the not-so-tall kitten or block heels for short durations such as on a date night with your husband or a party /get-together with friends or family, where you know that walking will be limited. And, for more grip and comfort, sneakers or strappy sandals can be combined with most of your outfits. Nisha advices, “Try wearing sneakers or printed canvas shoes over a dress for those evening walks, while opt for Mary Janes for an official gear.”
