Longer slits, breezy fabrics, handloom weaves, capes and collars–ethnic wear will undergo an exciting overhaul in the summer of 2017! We took a sneak peak at the upcoming collections by Anavila Misra, Pero by Aneeth Arora, Ekaya, Akaaro and Raw Mango among others and decoded top 10 summer ethnic trends for you. Are you ready to embrace the change?
Return of the Handloom
If there is only one thing that you want to add to your wardrobe, let this be it. Handloom weaves are going to be the hottest fashion trend this year. Be inspired by Anavila Misra’s hand woven linen in fine patterns, the precious weaves by Ekaya or the woven classics by Akaaro, symbolising eternal class and luxury.
Change your Drape
The nine-yards will never go out of fashion but the same old drape could get a little boring, isn’t it? 2017 will see the multifaceted sari in many avatars. You could drape it like a gown or go for a comfortable pant-style drape or you could also opt for the classy and back in vogue ‘Mumtaz’ style drape. Want to add more zing to your drape? Trade that boring blouse for a crop top, add a belt or throw in a cape, which incidentally is yet another popular trend to catch up on.
Who doesn’t like a little drama in life, or in an outfit? Frill sleeves, bell sleeves, peasant sleeves, it is all about light fabrics and a lot of experimenting with sleeves this season.
Collars are back in vogue. Try a ruffled collar on your blouse for a Victorian look or simply pull out those collared shirts from your wardrobe and team them up with your favourite saris for a runway look.
WM Tip: Team a printed sari with a crisp white shirt to reinvent your work wear.
Summer months call for light fabrics that will define ethnic trends this season. Cotton and silk blended saris in bright hues of pink, orange and blue (think the Raw Mango classic collection) are perfect for the season as are breezy kurtas in soft colours and light fabrics such as cotton and chiffon. Team your kurtas with flared palazzos, streamlined pants or even culottes for a versatile look.
Pleated, flared, striped, embroidered, tie-n-dye…the list is never-ending when it comes to the humble cropped pants or culottes, a must have for your wardrobe. Choose a wide-bottomed pair in silk and team up with an embellished vest for ethnic chic. For a casual daytime look, you can’t go wrong with a basic kurti and a flowing palazzo in beige, cream or even grey.
Add some ‘sheer’
Play peek-a-boo this summer with sheer details on your clothing and a lot of oomph! A combination of Chanderi and Organza can be used to create a beautiful peek-a-boo effect that is not revealing yet, extremely appealing and sensual.
WM tip: Combine two trends in one with a sheer cape over your traditional attire.
Slits go higher
Bold slits coupled with geometric prints are making ethnic more edgy this season. Team a front-slit kurta with light golden dhoti pants for a glamorous look or go modern with high side-slits over a pair of jeans or your favourite leggings for comfort. For a festive look, choose straight pants with embellished ankles to go with your bold kurta.
Layer with a cape
Capes can instantly perk up any outfit and suit every body type making it an essential wardrobe staple. Couple your extremely chic cape with a simple kurti, lehanga or sari and turn up the heat with some statement jewellery in the tow.
WM tip: How about a cape dupatta for hassle-free ethnic wear.
All about symmetry
Asymmetrical hemlines continue to rule the ramp, making kurtis more adventurous and fun. Get comfortable in a kurti of a flowy fabric and pair it with your favourite jeans, leggings or cropped pants for the perfect weekend look.
