Q: I’m a young professional that has to travel for work. I have to wear a suit when I am meeting clients but I space and money is a premium. Do you have any suggestions?

Starting out as a young professional, it can be financially challenging to invest in a wardrobe. This is why you should consider buying items that can serve many roles and can be mixed and matched. In today’s post, I will show you how to pair one suit and one tie, and make three outfits out of it by merely changing the shirt. This is especially useful if you have to travel and space is at a premium.

Many style experts advise the young professional to invest in the “power suit” which is usually in navy, the next suit should be the dark gray or charcoal suit. In my case, I decided to break a bit of convention and invest in a light gray wool suit. Although it is wool, the fabric has a looser weave which will keep you cool in the summer or the tropics. In a pinch, I have paired the jacket with a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt for a night out with colleagues.  Again the key to stretching your buck is to have each article fill multiple scenarios.

Here’s our basic three color tie. It can be striped or patterned but the thought process is use the colors in the tie to play off the shirt and the suit. I especially like this tie, as the colors can be readily matched to colors of shirts that are widely available. The first shirt is the basic white shirt. You can roll your eyes, but the white shirt should be a staple in every man’s wardrobe. In some cases, you may invest in multiple white shirts, with different weaves and fabrics.

The second is a grey shirt. In this case be sure that the color is close to but not exactly the color of the suit. The monochromatic look is very modern and can be easily pulled off as long as you vary the texture or the materials of each article.

Finally, the last color is the basic blue shirt. Another wardrobe staple that should be in every professional man’s closet.
