The Bride Who Sold her Wedding: Hansika’s Baraat

The Bride Who Sold her Wedding: Hansika’s Baraat

The venue was set as team WM arrived at the site of the baraat, yes…the bride’s baraat! An open roof rickshaw stood ready for a warm send off bedecked with flowers – on the back of the rick, a sign board aptly said, “Hansika’s Baraat, Is baar dulhan bhi band-baaje ke saath aayegi…”

Keep reading, as team WM takes you through her intimate, touching yet enjoyable festivities.

Band, Baja, Baraat And The Bride

It was late in the evening, the band started prepping for Hansika’s grand arrival – six women clad in traditional sarees holding heavy dhols stood strong among two boys with drums. They started playing to traditional street band tunes and there came the bride, tossing both hands in the air, in a merry mood to celebrate, she made her way down the stairs holding her delicate pink lehenga and started dancing to the catchy beats. Her family and friends couldn’t resist joining in on the fun and dance as Hansika lifted her lehenga ever so slightly and popped her show-stopping silver LED lit sneakers at everyone to see – indeed, the fashion statement of the night!

The bride then made her way into the rickshaw as photographs were taken of this capturable moment. Everyone headed to the temple dancing away on the streets – Hansika even made sure to pop up from the roofless rickety rickshaw for pictures – an image so bright and happy, it would warm your heart with a smile and remind you of a happy child popping out of a car sunroof like she’s ticked something off her bucket list.

When we asked Hansika about the whole idea of ‘the bride who wanted a baraat’, she said, “It’s been a dream come true – I wanted an all-girl band because I knew they’d be as good as the boys. The LED sneakers were bought especially for this occasion to be worn under my lehenga. It was well known that brides have had interesting entries at weddings but nobody has had an official baraat with their families dancing and celebrating on the road, so this is something that was really special to me! I believe that as of today, women and men are at par with each other, so, why should the bride be stereotypically sitting in some doli, all coy, while the boy arrives in style? My fiancé and his family were in full support of this. In fact, I was hoping if we crossed paths on the way to the temple that we could have had a baraat-off or something!”

Hansika Weds Gaurav – The Beautiful Reception

Just her, him, cherished family, and some warm heartfelt wishes — she wore the look of a blushing bride and he wore the smile of a man who knows how lucky he is…! Pore over the next few bits as we did our part at capturing some style but even more importantly, filled out a guestbook full of memories and wishes for the couple that left us feeling reassured about love and the beauty of a lifelong companionship.

Natasha, Cousin

On her first memory of the couple: “That would have to be when I met Gaurav for the first time — I think it was just before Hansika and Gaurav started dating and she liked him. He was crossing the street and coming towards us, we were at this café in Bandra at the time. She elbowed me and said, “You know that guy, I like him! What do you think, should I date him?” and I said, “Ya, I mean he’s cute and tall, he looks good.” So, that was the first time we met him. My husband, Ankit and I thought he was just perfect for Hansika because he balances her out – she’s very bubbly and vivacious and he’s very calm, it’s a great combination, so it works very well.”

First 3 words that come to mind when you think of the couple: Balanced, beautiful and fun.

Love is never having to… regret anything.

The couple is perfect together because… they’re well balanced.

Who do you think will fall asleep first tonight? “Probably Hansika, in her mind, but her eyes will be open – for the photos!”

If they made a movie of their life, who would play their characters? “Hansika is just like Geet (Kareena Kapoor) from Jab we Met, so she would be perfect. For Gaurav, I think may be Akshay Kumar because of his height and his calm persona.”

On his first memory of the couple: “I know Gaurav only through Hansika and I’ve known her for about 10-12 years now and as soon as she told me about her relationship and I first met them together, it was lovely — you know, nobody knows at first whether a couple is going to get married or not, but my first memory of them was a very pleasant one – they were happy and they had this cute banter, which is very important in order to have a successful relationship. And most importantly, they had each other’s back! I got all this from a very short and brief interaction, so I think it’s safe to say that if someone met them for a very short period of time and got that much out of it, you know that they’re destined to be together.”

First 3 words that come to mind when you think of the couple: Fun, love and madness! “Because I know Hansika (even if I don’t know Gaurav that well), there has to be some madness, otherwise they won’t be together.”

Love is never having to… explain!

The couple is perfect together because… they’re perfect for each other!

Hansika’s secret talent that nobody knows of: “Ha! If people are going to be answering this question, then the talent I’m going to say is obviously not a secret anymore. I won’t say manipulative, but she’s got a talent of diplomacy – she will make sure that she won’t take sides between two friends or two people, but, she will make sure things are better. She’s very diplomatic and it could be irritating for very close friends, but for other people it’s a talent. Although she’ll claim that she’s very blunt and upfront, you’d think she’s being very honest, but she is very diplomatic.”

Who do you think will fall asleep first tonight? Not Hansika!

If they made a movie of their life, who would play their characters? “I think Gaurav can play himself very well and Hansika will make sure she plays ‘herself’, because there will be nobody else playing her role. But, if she had to choose anybody in the world, she’d probably get Beyoncé, because Hansika is not going to settle for anything less than that, she’s the Queen Bee herself

On her outfit: “Well, I thought that since this is a reception, I might go a little western or completely western rather…And since it’s a half-Sindhi wedding, I decided that glitter is the way to go! This is actually one of my favourite dresses ever, it’s vintage Gucci and it’s my go-to when I’m looking for something clean, classic and conservative as well. Plus, gold is the colour of the moment anyway.”

On her first memory of the couple: “Hansika used to be my manager when I first started working, so I’ve known her forever! I have literally seen her grow as a manager, to go on to create this company (HC Media). Gaurav, I obviously met through her, so it’s kind of surreal that this is her wedding day and we’re all here nine years later.”

First 3 words that come to mind when you think of the couple: Wild, fun-loving and cheerful.

Love is never having to… not keep it real.

Hansika’s secret talent that nobody knows of: “I don’t know if nobody knows of this, but the girl can eat!”

Who do you think will fall asleep first tonight? “Hansika. Actually, no, she might keep him awake – so probably Gaurav!”

If they made a movie of their life, who would play their characters? “Kareena Kapoor as Hansika for sure and for Gaurav, Siddharth Malhotra.”

Shulmit, Hansika’s Close Friend

shulmit

On his first memory of the couple: “It’s when they both came to the place where we usually hang out called Ganesh Sagar in Chembur – she introduced Gaurav to us as her boyfriend and it was quite a surprise for us all.”

First 3 words that come to mind when you think of the couple: Cute, enthusiastic and cheerful.

Love is never having to… separate them ever!

Hansika’s secret talent that nobody knows of: “She can sing really well! (Shulmit later added that he was being sarcastic).”

Who do you think will fall asleep first tonight? None of the above!

If they made a movie of their life, who would play their characters? Abhishek Bachchan and Parineeti Chopra.

Vishal and Urmi, Cousin and Cousin Sister-in-Law

vishal-and-urmi

On their well-coordinated outfits: “It was a complete coincidence. It just happens most of the time.”

On their first memory of the couple: (Urmi) “Well, I met them for the very first time at my wedding, which was just a month back and they were very fun-loving. I think they balance each other out really well and marriage is all about that so it’s great.” (Vishal) “I met them first at our wedding too, and I thought that he’s a really nice guy, very down to earth.”

First 3 words that come to mind when you think of the couple: (Urmi) Opposites-attract, happy and fun-loving.

Hansika’s secret talent that nobody knows of: (Vishal) “Eating like a jhirkee!”

Who do you think will fall asleep first tonight? (Urmi) Of course Gaurav!

If they made a movie of their life, who would play their characters? (Vishal) “She’ll play her own character and play Gaurav’s too!”

Sanyukta, Hansika’s Mami

I asked, ” What do you want me to wear for your reception Hansika? Should I wear a Maharashtrian saree?

Hansika was very supportive of the idea. So, I opted for a rich paithani saree. Being a Marathi woman, why not wear something traditional. I knew nobody would wear something like this but I like to stand out. I accessorised it with a  Nath, bindi and mangal sutra of Maharashtrian origin.

“I chose this saree because it’s so lightweight, I love fuchsia as a colour, it’s really festive. I had a yellow blouse, so I thought it would really go well together as contrast. The saree is a traditional Gujarati saree that I bought from Surat.”

Rita Kumar, Gaurav’s Mother

Gaurav’s mother wrapped up our guestbook with a few sweet words on the couple: “My son has been brought up in such a way, that he has bonded with his grandparents so his upbringing started in a very close knit family. I feel he has found a similar bond and this amazing  compatibility when he met Hansika. I loved that she came with her baraat, with the dhol and everything – you know as parents we hadn’t the slightest clue of what the décor was or what  arrangements were being done, these two have done all the wedding planning on their own. Their efforts in painstakingly planning this whole wedding will not go unnoticed, I feel more and more people will get inspired by this whole unconventional wedding.”
