It was a curtain call of sorts in the world of fashion last Sunday as the stars signed off the 69th  Annual Cannes Film Festival. A festival that scores high on fashion and make-up, this red carpet event makes everyone sit-up and notice the stars as they walk in the best, err and sometimes worst fashion picks.

With an amazing display of fashion that took place this year, the dresses were a surprise everyday with no two gowns or non-gowns being even remotely similar to one another.

But, monochrome in shades of black and white and fairytale capes strung a common story this year on the red carpet. And, stars Kristen Stewart, Julianne More and of course, Bella Hadid brought back the almost-naked look. Meanwhile, Aishwarya Rai stayed away from the regular and posed bold make-up with plum and purple shades. We would like to stop here and say, it takes something to break the rules. And, she looked absolutely stunning in her Elie Saab hautest embroidered couture dress with plum lips and nude make-up.

Having said, here are the top 3 trends of Cannes 2016:

Monochrome made a comeback

A number of celebs went for angelic all-white or the traditional all-black ensembles. But, giving monochrome her twist, was Sonam Kapoor. She, first made heads turn in her awesome Ralph and Russo outfit with an endearing white cape. We loved this modern take-on of the sari. Next, Sonam Kapoor walked the red carpet in a champagne coloured Ralph and Russo. International stars like Chompoo Araya Hargate, Eva Longoria, Julianne Moore, Julia Roberts, Doutzen Kroes, Kendall Jennar and Li Bing Bing were also spotted in monochromatic outfits, sometimes even combining the two colour in new interesting ways.

Say it like a princess

Our favourite Blake Lively was an absolute stunner in her Disney-like powder blue ensemble. At the 69th Cannes Film Festival, Blake first got us with her Burberry ballgown and followed it with her Cinderella-like ensemble. Blake has certainly left no doubt in our minds that she’s a Disney princess with innocent style and a make-up that’s just right! Meanwhile, Amal Clooney relived a scene from a fairy-tale movie as she walked the red carpet in a long trail with her prince charming by her side. Yes, drool as you want – she was all locked in arms with George Clooney.

The long train

trail

Aishwarya got the camera going as she walked for the first time at the 69th Annual Cannes film festival in a Ali Younes couture. She looked all-so-regal in the cape gown embellished with golden applique work. While, Sonam Kapoor looked ballerina chic in her white cape ensemble from Ralph and Russo. Later, she had the cameras follow her when she  walked the red carpet for the 2nd time for the premiere of Loving in her season’s favourite Ralph and Russo. This time, she picked a silk crepe gown in a majestic champagne colour. What brought out the outfit was the floral cape. And, to compliment this dreamy dress, she wore floral necklace while keeping her make-up dewy and fresh. Then, there was the Cannes princess again, Blake Lively in gorgeous shoulder cape ensemble.
